THE family of a university student who died following a collision involving a car carrying three people and a bus in Miles Platting have paid tribute to him.

Asam Zulqurnain (22), of Frederick Street, Werneth, died when a blue Volkswagen Golf collided with a single-deck bus, at the junction of Oldham Road with Varley Street, at 10.30pm on Sunday (March 1).

One of the passengers in the car was thrown from the Volkswagen and was rushed to the North Manchester General Hospital with fractures to his ribs, skull and shoulder. He remains in a serious but stable condition.

Asam, the rear-seat passenger, was also taken to hospital but later died.

The driver of the vehicle has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and is currently being questioned by police.

Asam, who was studying a postgraduate law degree at Manchester University, was the youngest son of Zulqurnain Ali and Umtul Mahmooda.

His distraught parents described him as an “intelligent lad”, adding: “He had graduated from Lancaster University in 2008 and he was studying for a law degree at Manchester University.

“He was hoping to go into the legal profession. He was a good lad and the youngest of the family.

“The news of his death has been devastating and he will be deeply missed.”

His eldest brother Najam (33), said: “This is the worst day of my life, I just can’t believe this has happened. We were very close.”

Asam also leaves behind a brother Jameer (32), and sister Shama (31).

Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision to call the Area Two Road Policing Unit on 0161 856 3571.
