LUCKY listener Gilbert Clarke (40) scooped first prize in a radio competition — which meant he could tear up the electricity and gas bill for his Firwood Park, Chadderton, home.
Key 103 launched a month-long competition this week, asking listeners to submit a bill — gas, electricity, phone or credit card — up to the value of £500.
Every day, DJs will choose one bill at random and give the person who submitted it just 30 minutes to call the studio and claim the prize.
The very first winner was Mr Clarke who has had his dual gas and electrical bill of £480.24 paid — but he very nearly missed out. He wasn’t tuned in to Key 103’s breakfast show when presenter Mike Toolan announced his name on air.
Luckily, friends who were phoned him and he called the station to claim the prize in the nick of time!
The father-of two, an accounts receivable officer at North Manchester General Hospital, said: “I only found out when my friends phoned me. I was lucky to win — I couldn’t believe it.
“I have been feeling the pinch because we had this gas and electricity bill to pay as well as car insurance for both mine and my wife Joanne’s car which was around £1,000.”
DJ Mike said : “Everyone is feeling the pinch at the moment so we will really enjoy paying off as many of Greater Manchester’s bills as we can and making people a bit better off.”
