SPORTING regulars were boxing clever when the Mayor, Councillor Shoab Akhtar, dropped into the Oldham Boxing centre for a look around.
The Oldham Boxing club, based at the Derker annex, is part of the pioneering ACCE project, which helps users of alcohol, cocaine, cannabis and ecstasy kick the habit and replace it with altogether healthier activities like boxing.
Around 80 young people have taken part in ACCE since it was launched last year, boosting their health, self-discipline, self-esteem and confidence.
The boxing project is a joint venture between Oldham DAAT (Drug and Alcohol Action team) and Manchester’s former England International and Professional boxer turned Consultant, Eric Noi.
The club is also open to the wider community and Eric says it is an ideal way to engage young people.
Eric said: “Boxing provides young people with the opportunity to fulfil their potential.
“We have a twin track strategy for producing both elite performers and citizens.
“Oldham Boxing is the ideal vehicle for equipping young people with transferable skills for life.”
