‘Movie moguls’ bring the big screen into school

MOVIE buffs at Failsworth School can catch all the latest flicks without leaving the premises — thanks to an innovative new scheme.

Since the Roxy cinema closed in 2005, students have had to travel to Ashton or Manchester to keep up with all the latest blockbusters.

But that was before the Failsworth became one of the first schools in the country to sign up to the national filmclub scheme.

The scheme, supported by the likes of Emma Thompson and Ewan McGregor, is a Government-funded initiative offering thousands of children free access to 60,000 films via the interactive website, lovefilm.com.

The Failsworth Roxy filmclub runs every Wednesday and Friday lunchtime in the School theatre and pupils are allowed to eat their packed lunches while watching.

A dedicated team of pupils works each week to distribute films, organise the sale of tickets and tidy the cinema at the end of each film.

Filmclub co-ordinator Lucy Whitehead visited the school and said that it had one of the best set ups she had seen with “very friendly, helpful pupils.”
