OLDHAM Athletic are investigating a complaint that drunken players disgraced themselves and the club during a boozy night out at Belle Vue dog track.

It’s claimed striker Lee Hughes had manager John Sheridan in a headlock following a heated exchange.

Goalkeeper Mark Crossley is said to have intervened as peacemaker. Captain Sean Gregan was allegedly involved in another incident.

It’s also claimed their lewd behaviour left women staff shocked and traumatised.

Most of the trouble is alleged to have taken place in a private room being used by Athletic’s players and staff, though some is said to have spilled outside into the car park.

Some of the alleged incidents have been captured on CCTV which Athletic club officials have viewed.

Chief executive Alan Hardy received a complaint from management at the greyhound track about the behaviour of players and staff on Tuesday night.

He said: “If it is proven employees acted in a way which brings the name of the club into disrepute, the directors will take the strongest action available.”

Athletic club officials have since visited the track, where they viewed CCTV footage, and issued an official apology to management at Belle Vue.

Mr Hardy explained that it was sad the trouble, which occurred late in the evening, marred the event as 150 fans, players and staff had a night which was linked a sponsorship package involving the football club and greyhound track.

He added that he hopes the incidents, which did not involve any spectators, will not jeopardise future relations and the sponsorship deal which is in its first season.

Mr Hardy wants to make it clear that the alleged incidents did not involve all the players.

“It was a small number. The majority were well behaved, had a good night and did not consume too much alcohol,” he explained.

“The club is working hard on various projects such as the Royal Oldham Hospital’s Link4Pink Appeal.

“After receiving a lot of positive publicity for wearing the pink kit for the Leeds game, some of our players have spoilt it by attracting these unwanted headlines.”

Athletic directors are unhappy about the players being given two days off after the 1-1 draw with Leeds on Monday when they had another crucial fixture on Saturday.
