British Waterways is to trial chaperoned trips through Stanedge Tunnel as part of an initiative to improve customer experience.
It is part of a package of improvements which include increased efficiency and providing safer passage through the tunnel.
Steve Hemming, leisure business manager for British Waterways Yorkshire, said the chaperoned trips will begin at the start of the season in April. He said: “Boaters will be able to travel through the tunnel under their own power with BW staff acting as chaperones and advising boaters on navigation.
“As a result, through trips will run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, offering boaters increased flexibility.
“In addition, we are reviewing the current communications system in the tunnel to decrease the need for close BW supervision.
The Stanedge Tunnel and Visitor Centre will be opening on April 4. Boaters wishing to book their through trip should contact the business support team: 0113 281 6860 or: enquiries.yorkshire@ britishwaterways.co.uk
