Appeal after man’s death

POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a pensioner died a month after he was knocked down in Oldham town centre.
Anthony Chester (73), of Spring Street, Greenacres, was crossing George Street on January 10 when he was hit by a Renault Megane, which was reversing slowly having been parked.
The driver stopped to help Mr Chester, along with two men and a woman. But he told them that he was fine and walked to the Weavers Arms in Huddersfield Road.
He then started to feel pain and he was taken to the Royal Oldham Hospital by ambulance with a suspected injured hip. He died there on February 10 from septicemia.
Officers would now like to speak to the people who stopped to help Mr Chester.
Sgt Simeon Holt, from Greater Manchester Police’s road policing unit, said: “A number of people stopped to help Anthony when he fell, including the driver, but he refused any help.
“We have spoken again to the driver but we would like the three other people who stopped to help to get in touch.
“If you were on George Street and remember this incident please contact the police.”
Anyone with information should contact police on 0161-856 8473.
