Matt Rooney (centre) and his ‘super-pals’ (from the left) Joe Durr, Joe Gledhill, Jack Nutter and George Tilley arrived at Hulme to a heroes welcome.
THIS fab five got the £100,000 Christie at Oldham Campaign off to a cracking start, with a pedal push which netted around £1,000.
The Hulme Grammar School pupils were the first to pledge their support to the campaign which will help bring lifesaving equipment to the town.
The superheroes braved the early morning elements and donned ‘Superman’ costumes to cycle to school to raise cash for the campaign.
The idea was the brainchild of teenager Matt Rooney, a Year 8 pupil at the school.
He drafted in the support of four of his schoolchums to make the five mile journey from Grasscroft to arrive at school for the 9am start.
Matt (13) of Brookway, said: “I have lost three grandparents to cancer.
“We all know someone who has been affected by cancer, so it seemed a good idea to try and raise some money for the Christie Hospital while keeping fit on our bikes and, at the same time, attracting everyone’s attention on the way to school by cycling in Superman outfits.”
Matt and his schoolmates Jack Nutter, Joe Durr, George Tiley and Joe Gledhill, left Grasscroft at 7.30am, arriving at Hulme to a heroes welcome from their fellow pupils.
They returned home by pedal power at the end of the day, and are still collecting the sponsorship which they estimate will total, and give a grand start to the appeal.
