THE Chadderton branch of the Royal British Legion is toasting a bumper pay day after they collected more than £30,000 for the poppy appeal.

The cash, which was collected during October and November last year, flooded in, with pubs, businesses and shoppers across Chadderton all digging deep for a worthy cause.

Twenty five schools in Chadderton and 12 schools in Royton also lent their support to help the branch raise more cash than at any other time in its 88-year-history, with a total of more £30,860.

Alan Winterbottom, poppy organiser for the branch, said: “The poppy appeal continues to capture the public’s imagination because people know about Afghanistan and Iraq.

“These conflicts are still going on and youngsters are very much aware of them. We’re absolutely thrilled with our total this year and would like to give a huge thanks to all the people who helped collect and who gave generously.

“We would also like to give a special thanks to the cadets from Our Lady’s School, who collected more than £4,000 towards the total.”
