ROYTON and Crompton School kicked-off its Red Nose Day celebrations a day early.

Yesterday, the specialist college staged a grand comedy spectacular featuring staff and pupils.

Alan Campbell, head of Year 10, was the compere of the variety spectacular held in aid of Comic Relief.

MEANWHILE Ooldham has been invaded by the Village People, wig-wearing children and sponge-wielding car-washers in aid of Comic Relief.

Oldhamers know a good cause when they see one and this year has been no exception, with young and old from across the borough donning zany outfits and red noses to do something funny for money.

Kicking-off the fund-raising extravaganza were 40 beaver scouts from Royton and Crompton, who donned pyjamas and wigs for some orienteering with difference at Tandle Hill Park.

Not to be outdone, a very familiar looking line-up consisting of a policeman, a cowboy, a builder, a native American and a biker were found at North Chadderton School, as a brave group of sixth formers geared up to become the Village People for the day. Also raising vital cash were pupils from Crompton Primary School, who got their hands dirty with a sponsored car wash. While residents of Holland Close sheltered housing in Delph held a games afternoon organised by Housing 21 manager Claire Chadwick.

Red nose-wearing residents raised £40.
