GIVE us a W, give us an I, give us an N for young cheerleaders at St Hugh’s Primary School, Holts.
The five- and six-years-olds were top of the pom poms when they wowed the judges with their dazzling moves, inspired by the film “High School Musical”, at a competition in Oldham Sports Centre.
Schools from around Oldham took part in the cheerleading dance off after they were introduced to the sport last year.
St Hugh’s were joint winners in the Key Stage 1 section (Years 1 and 2) along with Lyndhurst Primary School, Oldham.
The Key Stage 2 (Years 3 to 6) winners were Beal Vale Primary, Shaw, while Radclyffe was the top secondary.
Teaching assistant Kerry Widdowson trained the St Hugh’s team and said: “They loved it. We have been practising the cheers and the chants every week and they were fantastic.
“I also think it’s helped their co-ordination and memory in the classroom.”
Last year every school in Oldham got the chance to try cheerleading, resulting in many setting up squads. The competition was organised by Oldham Community Leisure and school sports competition manager Steve Tyrell.
