Campaign to recruit carers

OLDHAMERS are being asked if they can spare some time to care for a disabled child.

This week is Share the Care Week, a national campaign co-ordinated by the Shared Care Network, which is aiming to recruit 7,000 new short break carers for disabled children.

Oldham Family Link Scheme, which is part of Oldham Fostering Service, is taking part in the campaign and is looking to recruit more local people to help.

Councillor Kay Knox, Cabinet member for children, young people and families, said: “Share the Care Week provides a great opportunity to recognise and thank our existing carers. It is also a great time to encourage others to think about how they can get involved.”

Short breaks are not one-off holidays but are regular opportunities for families with disabled children to recharge their batteries.

Oldham’s family link co-ordinator, Mair Felix, said: “If you can care for a disabled child during the day, or offer overnight or weekend stays, then we would love to hear from you.”

Some experience of caring for a disabled child would be an advantage but is not essential, as all carers are given training and support, plus an allowance to cover expenses.
