Victims of theft sought by police
Date published: 17 March 2009
ANYONE who lost a purse or bag while shopping in Rochdale may have been the victim of a pickpocket.
And Rochdale police want anyone who thinks they have had items stolen to contact them.
Between December and February, 15 people have reported that their purses or wallets have been taken out of their bags while they were out shopping or in cafes, pubs and supermarkets in the town.
Most took place when the victim placed a bag under a chair or table or while shopping.
Det Sgt Sam Halligan said: “Most of the time, the people did not realise they’d fallen victim to a bag-dipper until later on.
“Many of them have been pensioners and I believe there may be more victims out there.
“Perhaps you had thought you had lost your purse when you were out in Rochdale. If you now think it may have been stolen, I’d urge you to call us so we can investigate.”
Anyone who believes they may be a victim should call the Volume Crime Team on 0161-856 8716.
Steven Wastell (27), of Halliday Court, Smithybridge, Rochdale, has been charged with six offences of theft and appeared at Rochdale Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
