CRIME has plummeted in the area when compared with last year.
Area Inspector Collette Rose said: “In comparison with the same period last year we have seen a reduction in crime across the neighbourhood from 607 recorded crimes to 446.
“This is a staggering cut of over 150 crimes.”
When comparing the first two months of 2009 to 2008 in Royton, Shaw and Crompton, criminal damage fell from 137 to 88, burglary from 116 to 77, violence from 59 to 47 and anti-social behaviour from 196 to 171. Vehicle crime rose from 104 to 124 and robbery from nine to 13.
Insp Rose said the neighbourhood team continued to work hard in relation to crime issues and listening and reacting to what the community wants.
Shift and patrol patterns had been changed accordingly and are having an effect.
Insp Rose urged people to keep possessions out of view, saying an overwhelming percentage of burglaries and car crime were due to unlocked doors and windows and leaving valuables on display. Criminals from Manchester, Bolton and further afield are suspected to be coming into the area because they are too well known where they live, she added.
Police surgeries are now held at Holy Trinity Church, Royton, every Thursday from 10am to noon and Crompton Library once a month, the next dates being April 2, May 7 and June 4, from 9.30am to 12.30pm. There are plans to make this weekly.
PC Adam Murphy, has been appointed as the Shaw beat manager.
Co-optees are back on board
THE meeting was the first since Oldham Council agreed to split Royton, Shaw and Crompton Area Committee in two.
Mike Dodd, David Dunning, Judith Haughton, Jo Salway and Jean Maxwell, all co-optees on the previous committee, were appointed co-optees again.
Mr Dodd was named chairman and the decision to appoint a vice chairman was deferred to the next meeting.
Junk yard move
A REQUEST was made to turn a junk yard next to Beal Hey recycling centre into part of the centre. The move will be put to the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority.
