Campaign to promote tourism

Saddleworth has launched a three-pronged campaign to promote the area as a high profile tourist destination.

Spearheaded by Katie Millett, the education officer based at Saddleworth Museum, the project features tempting delights for schoolchildren and adults alike.

And Katie (45), who is busy contacting schools, said: “School trips to Saddleworth would have a huge impact on every child.

“By choosing any combination of learning experiences from our diverse attractions, schools can make their own day which offers a wide variety of fun, value for money, curriculum-based activities.”

Katie cites Saddleworth Museum’s exciting workshops where children are taken into Victorian rooms for hands-on washing up with a dolly tub, washboard and old fashioned mangle.

Uppermill Library offers a host of activities to suit literacy requirements and valuable material to help children discover the world of books.

And Saddleworth Canal Cruises host enchanting trips along the famous Huddersfield Canal with a fascinating educational commentary by skipper John Lund.

John, who owns the 70-foot long Pennine Moonraker, operates trips between Wade Lock and the Wool Road Basin across two restored locks, traversing three waterway levels.

He said: “Travel by canal adds a whole new dimension to learning. It gives children — and adults — a completely different perspective on our countryside.”
