Man fights for life after pub fight

Date published: 18 March 2009

A MAN is fighting for his life in hospital after hitting his head on the road during a fight outside a busy pub.

The incident broke out when a man was arguing with a group of 10 men outside the Sun Inn, Oldham Road, Failsworth, at around 6.50pm on Saturday.

Two more men and another woman tried to intervene in the argument, but instead the group started punching out at them.

As a result, one of the men who intervened, aged 45, fell to the ground and hit his head on the floor.

He is being treated in Hope Hospital where he remains in a critical condition with a serious head injury.

The man involved in the initial argument, and another woman, were also punched in the face, as well as the other man who intervened.

They all suffered minor injuries. The group then left the pub.

The man who punched the 45-year-old man is described as white, in his early 20s and about 5ft 8in tall.

He was wearing a black hooded top and carrying a takeaway box.

The rest of the group are described as being white men in their early 20s.

Det Con Rob Kennedy said: “One man is left fighting for his life after this assault, and his attacker needs to be caught.

“We know that this group of men were not regulars in the pub, but we are sure that there were some people in the area who will know them, and we ask them to get in touch.

“We are led to believe that this group were on their way to watch the Amir Khan fight at the Manchester Arena, so there may have been witnesses who saw them board public transport or get into taxis.”
