Tunnel’s host of great days out

Britain’s longest, highest and deepest canal tunnel in the UK reopens tomorrow after its winter sleep.

The famous Stanedge Tunnel and Visitor Centre welcomes its first visitors of the season which is expected to be a boom time for the attraction.

Tourists can take a fascinating glass-topped boat trip to hear tales from Stanedge’s guides about the people who built the tunnel.

The visitor centre’s exhibition delves more into the tunnel’s construction and history.

Alternatively, tourists are encouraged to bring a picnic or pop into the refurbished café.

James Dean, visitor services manager for Stanedge Tunnel and Visitor Centre, said: “We have a whole series of exciting events planned for throughout the season.

“Highlights include our first-ever teddy bear picnic, a falconry day, and a painting workshop with acclaimed artist Ashley Jackson.

“We are planning a week-long Artsfest exhibition and Marsden Jazz Festival — so there really is something for all the family.”

First up on the opening weekend is Kids Arts Week where children will take part in a whole range of craft activities.

On Easter weekend there will be Easter egg hunts and later in April, the famous Cuckoo Festival.
