2,350 to get cycle lessons
Date published: 03 April 2009
Over 2,350 Oldham schoolchildren will get free cycle training after Cycling England awarded the borough £94,000.
The money will be used for much-needed training places on the Bikeability scheme, the new national standard for England.
And the Unity Partnership’s Road Safety team, on behalf of Oldham Council, will ensure that every school in the borough with an approved travel plan will be offered cycle training for up to 24 pupils.
School travel plans help to encourage sustainable travel policies, such as walking and cycling to school.
Children in Years 5 and 6 will benefit in almost 100 schools.
It is part of the Government’s plan to tackle congestion and encourage healthier and active lifestyles as more children will be able to cycle to school safely once they have trained.
