Self-referral for people who stammer

Date published: 03 April 2009

OLDHAMERS who stammer can now refer themselves to a specialist speech and language therapist without having to go through their GP.

The new self-referral system has been designed to make the process easier and quicker.

Residents can also text or e-mail their details so they do not have to speak to anyone.

They will then be invited to meet the therapist on a one-to-one basis.

A support group has also been set up for over-16s, where they can share their experiences, ask health workers questions or just be among people without worrying about stammering.

Win Ashmore, specialist speech and language therapist from Oldham Community Health Services (part of NHS Oldham), said:

“You may stammer yourself, or know someone who does, though people often hide it by changing the words they use or talking as little as possible.

“Even now, people who stammer can become the butt of jokes and obviously this is completely unacceptable.

“It is clear, therefore, that having a stammer can lead to a lack of confidence and can make it difficult to get help.

“Self-referral and the support group are both designed to make it as easy as possible to get this help.”

The group is held at Moorside Medical Centre, Ripponden Road, between 4 and 6pm on the first Monday of every month.

The session will move to the second Monday of the month when there is a bank holiday.

The next meeting will be held on Monday, refreshments are available, and people can turn up on the day.
