Mayor ticks boxes for democracy

The Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Shoab Akhtar, is hoping it will be “Yes Minister” for a project to get youngsters interested in democracy.
He met Culture Minister Andy Burnham to ask him for Government funding for an education programme on trial in Oldham’s schools and colleges. Councillor Akhtar has been working on the scheme which links into the national curriculum with freelance consultant Catherine Yates.
He said no other local authority has such a sprogramme — but remained tight-lipped about the details ahead of the the official launch.
