£6m bid to beat burglars

OLDER people and those on low incomes in Oldham are to get grants to fit new door and window locks as part of a Home Office crackdown on crime.

A £6 million Government handout for up to 45,000 homes across the country will see discount vouchers offered for DIY stores B&Q and Focus.

The initiative will pay for new locks to be fitted to combat burglary, amid fears of a credit crunch crimewave.

Anyone who fears their home is at risk can apply for an information pack, which includes discount vouchers and advice on how to secure their property.

The Government wants to boost home security following the latest set of crime figures which showed domestic burglaries increased 4 per cent between July and September last year.

A leaked Government paper last year revealed ministers’ concerns the recession would prompt a sharp rise in so–called acquisitive crimes.

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said: “There are lots of simple, practical steps we can take to secure our home in the new free burglary prevention pack available to everyone.

“I am delighted to be working with B&Q and Focus to ensure that home security equipment is as affordable as possible. This will run alongside a Home Office funded handyman scheme to secure over 45,000 homes.

“The public are our best weapon in fighting crime and I want us all to work together to stop those criminals who may think they can take advantage in tough times.”
