Quarry plan rejected

THE Environment Agency has rejected Open Goal’s application for a permit to dispose of inert waste at Birk’s Quarry, Oldham.
A spokesman said today: “The Environment Agency has made this decision as we do not believe the operator could prevent mud and water from the site being transferred to the highway.
“We accept the view from Oldham Council as the Highways Authority that this presents an unacceptable risk. Greater Manchester Police also expressed concern.”
Gordon Whitaker, environment manager for Greater Manchester said:
“The Environment Agency exists to protect people and the environment and we have made this decision based on environmental legislation and expert opinion. We have had over 300 representations from the community.”
