Opposition grows over library closure
Date published: 14 April 2009
Protesters gathered outside Broadway Library yesterday for a bank holiday protest about plans to close it in June.
South Chadderton councillor Dave Hibbert has distributed 1,500 leaflets in the campaign to keep the 55-year-old building open.
Library supporters have started a petition, and they joined him outside the building on Saturday and Easter Monday to continue their campaign.
Oldham Council confirmed this month that it will be shutting Broadway and Stoneleigh libraries in June, and that the mobile library service will end in October.
Councillor Hibbert said: “We had a good turn out on both days and the petition is collecting hundreds of names. This is exactly the wrong time to be considering selling sites like this.
“We want the library saved, or replaced with a facility on the site, with the local community involved in making the decisions.”
