Over £1,000 was raised when supporters and volunteers turned out for the official opening of the Pennine Pen animal rescue centre in Oldham.
The group has taken over the former Disability Resource Centre in Honeywell Lane, Oldham, to expand its work.
The ceremony was carried out by Medlock Ward councillor Jean Jones, and the open day attracted hundreds of visitors.
Manager Michael Waugh said: “I can’t believe the number of people who turned up. We raised £1,400 on the day. We now have room for 25 cats, six dogs and 20 small animals including rabbits.”
Pennine Pen has been running for over seven years and takes in small animals, from guinea pigs to cats and dogs, which are looked after by volunteer foster carers until a permanent home can be found.
It will be now be able to expand its work, but will still run its charity shop in Ashton Road which also raises funds to care for the animals. The shop is open every day except Tuesdays, from 1pm to 3pm, and can be contacted on 621 0819.
