GREAT NIGHT OUT: First4Disabilities evening at Livingstones nightclub
HAVING a disability isn’t easy . . . but for anyone who might feel isolated or unable to fit in, there is light at the end of the tunnel.
First4Disabilities, based at Borough Mill, Hathershaw, has been running for eight months and provides a safe, high quality care and support service for disabled youngsters and their families.
The ground-breaking project aims to change attitudes and reduce physical and social barriers affecting those with additional needs.
It also provides exciting opportunities for voluntary work and promotes independence.
A long list of services includes a club night at Livingstone’s nightclub in Fairbottom Street, Oldham, on the third Wednesday of each month. This is an opportunity for the group to experience the club scene in a safe and secure environment.
Embrace Music, from the Social Inclusion Centre in Chadderton Court, helps provide talented DJs with additional needs, giving them a chance to be heard.
Managing director Angela Wellon said: “I have always worked in mental health and my third son is autistic.
“I left my previous job which was 14-19 strategy lead learning co-ordinator with Oldham Council because the job was not meeting my needs.
“Then I set up this group. I don’t believe anyone should be restricted from doing what they want just because because they have a disability.
“We try and provide support to the whole family. These teenagers want to be accepted and want to be like any other teenager.
“The club night is for over-18s only and we have around 50 members who attend each month.
“We just try to engage them in different activities which they enjoy.”
Entrance to the club night is £5 and carers are free. Drinks are £2 all night.
Embrace Music is run by Ron Atkinson who teaches music and DJ skills to anyone who wants to learn music. Many have since gone on to make a career out of it.
Music lovers can attend sessions at Chadderton Court. Call 0161-770 8651 for details.
