Family pub has money rolling in at the double

FAMILY-RUN pub the North Star Inn at High Crompton raked in £1,150 for the Christie at Oldham Campaign.
Landlady Linda Lomas and her twin daughters, Sarah and Jo, called on regulars at the Rushcroft Road pub to rally round to support them.
And they netted the figure with a fair, raffles and an auction to help the £100,000 appeal along its way.
The 30-year-old twins are joint bar managers, and agreed to do some fund-raising when they were contacted by the Christie’s appeals office, asking for their support.
Sarah said: “I know a couple of people who have cancer and they have to go all the way to the Christie Hospital for treatment.
“Raising money for a radiotherapy centre in Oldham is a fantastic cause, it will be so handy for everyone living in this area.”
Sarah pledged to continue fund-raising by putting pots on the bar for customers to pop their loose change into, and urged other people to come up with their own way of supporting the campaign.
“It’s easy fund-raising if people will help you with it,” she said.
The Evening Chronicle teamed up with the Christie Hospital to launch the appeal earlier this month. The world-famous cancer hospital chose Oldham as the site for its first radiotherapy centre when it decided to extend its services but had little scope to expand at it’s Withington home. It also wanted to take treatment closer to patients’ homes, and the Oldham centre will be part of a network which will be the first of its kind in the UK.
Golfers get behind Christie campaign
SADDLEWORTH Golf Club has adopted the Christie’s at Oldham campaign as its charity for the year.
Captain Dave Pullen and lady captain Anita Scholes picked the cause because both have links with the Christie Hospital.
Dave’s mother, Judith, had breast cancer 11 years ago, and was treated at The Christie.
He said: “She was treated and cured, so it was particularly poignant for me that we decided to support the appeal.”
The pair expect to raise several thousand pounds with charity events during the course of the year.
They include fund-raising tournaments and a monthly raffle for a priority parking spot at the club.
“The money we raise will all go into a kitty with a view to handing over a lump sum to the appeal at the end of the year,” said Dave.
The Oldham Chronicle’s deputy editor, Dave Whaley, is captain of Werneth Golf Club, and has also named the Christie’s at Oldham campaign his charity during his year of office.
