Former England captain calls on public to back £100,000 appeal

MORE good wishes for success are pouring in as the Christie’s at Oldham appeal gathers momentum.

Former England cricket captain and Lancashire player Mike Atherton has added his voice to the call for support in the fight against cancer.

The £100,000 appeal will help foot the bill for providing two linear accelerators to give patients radiotherapy treatment from Oldham’s new £17 million radiotherapy centre.

He has a strong affinity with Oldham — he lived in Failsworth as a boy and played for Woodhouses Cricket Club until he was 19, starting as a junior and moving on to the senior team.

Mike still has strong family connections with the Woodhouses area, where his parents Alan and Wendy live, and with the club, where his father is treasurer.

Mike, a cricket commentator with Sky TV, said: “The new radiotherapy centre will make a huge difference to the people of Oldham, and as an Oldham lad, I’m right behind this campaign.”

He sent the following words of encouragement to Oldhamers who have pledged to help the campaign: “Best of luck with the fund-raising. It’s a great cause.” It is not the first time Mike has supported Christie’s — he appears on the charity’s corporate DVD, commending the hospital on the work it does, and calling for people to back it.
