PEOPLE looking for work now have a new service to help them into employment.

The Salvation Army in Failsworth has launched an employment resource centre at its community church in Oldham Road.

New computer facilities in a specially designated area of the church will allow job seekers to search online for employment as well as prepare CVs.

The centre has been made possible thanks to funding from Failsworth East ward councillor Paul Martin.

Councillor Martin used his personal budget allowance to buy laptop computers, a printer, chairs and tables.

The initiative follows the earlier launch of ‘Debt Matters’, a scheme run by the Salvation Army in Failsworth to offer residents help in tackling debt problems.

Salvation Army captain Lynley Oliver said: “We are all aware of the current economic downturn and the effect this has had on communities, families and individuals.

“One of the effects of this downturn is the increase in unemployment and it is with this in mind that Failsworth Salvation Army is working.”

As well as the new facilities, members of the church community clubbed together to decorate the foyer area in readiness for the new centre.

And the community church is looking to employ an adviser to help people searching for jobs.

Councillor Martin said: “I am very excited and proud to have been able to contribute to, and to be involved with, the new centre.

“It will enable job seekers from Failsworth to search the market in pleasant surroundings with help not normally available in a traditional Jobcentre set up.”

The centre opens tomorrow and will initially open on Wednesdays 9.30am to 3pm.
