New tip deadline looms
Date published: 28 April 2009
THE deadline is looming for the public to have its say on plans for a new tip on the Green Belt in Bardsley.
Consultation on the proposals at Coal Pit Lane, next to Daisy Nook Country Park, closes on Friday.
But one campaigner fears that not enough people know about the scheme.
The former colliery was identified in May as a site which could take inert and residual waste — the rubbish left after recycling — for Greater Manchester.
If approved, tipping could start in 2012 and last for more than 10 years.
The Joint Waste Development Plan, produced by the 10 local councils, also includes proposals to extend the existing, non-hazardous landfill at Highmoor, Scouthead.
The Bardsley site is next to houses, Holy Family and Limehurst primary schools, Werneth Golf and Manor Park where Oldham Rugby Union Club play.
Linda Needham (59), of Hollins Road, fears it will destroy the area and hit property prices. She has handed out 300 objection forms.
She said: “I have spoken to lots and lots of people.
“I went to Daisy Nook and spoke to the anglers, dog walkers and horse riders.
“I’d say 99 per cent of people knew nothing about it which is frightening because it will affect thousands.”
Residents can have their say on the plans by visiting www.gmwastedpd.co.uk by May 1.
They can also view the proposals at Oldham Civic Centre.
