A Shaw thug who smashed a glass in a man’s face has been jailed for 20 months.

Daniel Rowe (23) attacked Jamie Jones when he got involved in a disagreement between Rowe and another man.

Mr Jones was left with three wounds, and still had glass embedded in his head.

Ms Vanessa Thomson, prosecuting, told Minshull Street Crown Court, Manchester, that Mr Jones (20) saw Rowe, of Beal Lane, arguing with a much younger man in September last year.

She said Mr Jones told Rowe, whom he had known since they were both children, he was “out of order and that he should pick on someone his own size”.

Rowe smashed a tumbler in Mr Jones’s face and ran off. Mr Jones initially gave chase but had to give up because of his injuries.

He was taken by ambulance to the Royal Oldham Hospital, where he was treated for a large wound to his head and two small impact wounds.

Medical staff were unable to remove all the broken glass from the wound.

When police found Rowe, he claimed he had been assaulted by Mr Jones during an argument in Ripponden Road, Oldham. Rowe admitted causing grievous bodily harm.

Mr Thomas Gilbart, defending, said: “This was by no means an unprovoked attack.

“The dispute between the defendant and the complainant began when Jamie Jones had involved himself in a disagreement between Rowe and another man.”

The judge, Mr Recorder Parkin, said: “I fully accept that you may have had some dispute with Jamie Jones.

“There may even have been a previous fight, but none of that can excuse the use by you of a glass as a weapon in the course of this incident.

“The use of a weapon such as a glass, almost inevitably leads to a serious injury. Notwithstanding everything that your counsel has said, I do take the view that an immediate custodial sentence is necessary to reflect the seriousness of this offence.

“You are someone who, despite your young age, has a significant record of less serious offences of violence dating back some years.”
