Illegal off-roaders warned

ILLEGAL off-road bikers are being warned that they risk having their bikes seized, or even crushed.

Police in Oldham West have launched Operation Westerland, which will run throughout the summer months to target those who ride off-road bikes and mini motos illegally in public places.

PC Nathan McLean said: “As summer draws nearer, we want to make it crystal clear to owners of off-road bikes that we will not put up with their use in public places. Not only is it a nuisance, but it is also a danger to the public and the rider.

“By launching this operation we are warning people who choose to ride illegally that they risk having their bike destroyed. We are also asking for the co-operation of young people, their parents and local residents in helping to tackle this issue.”

Police have the power, under Section 59 of the Police Reform Act 2002, to seize vehicles being used in a manner likely to cause alarm, distress or annoyance.

If anyone has concerns about the illegal use of off-road bikes, they are asked to contact police on 0161 872 5050 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Oldham West residents can also contact their Neighbourhood Policing Team on 0161 856 8927 or oldhamwest.npt@gmp.police.uk.

IN the next few months police in Oldham will be working to deliver the Policing Pledge, giving people a minimum standard of service they can expect from their local police.

They are asking for residents’ input to influence the policing of their neighbourhoods, to ensure service is focussed on the needs of local communities, and addressing the issues that matter most to people in Oldham.
