Beer walkers are set for June 6 trek

THE dedicated organisers of the popular Saddleworth beer walk are proving they have been there, done that — and got the T-shirt.

To celebrate staging the event, they turned out in their smart new shirts bearing the logo for this year’s walk — The Crate Escape.

They were joined by two event organisers from the newly-formed Saddleworth NSPCC fund-raising team, Amanda Flynn and Natalie Coverley.

Amanda and Natalie will be among more than 1,500 walkers taking part in this year’s event, staged on the anniversary of D-Day — Saturday, June 6.

Amanda said: “It’s a great event and we are all very excited at the prospect of raising money for our charities on the day.”

The beer walk T-shirts are available for purchase online at the beer walk’s website, along with entry forms for the 11.2 mile trek.

Richard Taylor, chairman of Saddleworth Round Table beer walk committee, believes they can top the club’s funding raising total of £20,000 — with walkers raising an additional £50,000 for their own dedicated causes.

He said: “The T-shirts cost £7 each, with the vast proportion of the money raised by their sale going to local charities.”

This year’s walk — the 36th in the Round Table’s history — encompasses landmark pubs and clubs on a route around Greenfield, Uppermill, Dobcross, Delph and Diggle.

Last year, the procession included a 100-strong team of fund-raisers dressed as bumble bees and others in colourful floats and costumes.

This year’s walk begins at 2pm after registration at Churchill Playing Fields, Greenfield, and finishes there at around 8pm.

Mr Taylor, who heads the committee with his deputy, Kevin Ridings, added: “The new website has raised our profile this year.

“It gives easy access to would-be entrants and offers them a great chance to share the fun and excitement of the day.”

The beer walk route from Churchill Playing Fields, takes in Boarshurst Band Club in Greenfield; King William IV, Greenfield; The Waggon, Uppermill; The Navigation, Dobcross; Dobcross Bowling Club; The Old Bell Inn and The White Lion in Delph; The Hanging Gate, Diggle; The Church Inn, Uppermill and Uppermill Sports Club, finishing at the playing fields.
