Inspired by local sights and sounds

AN exhibition showing the diversity of Oldham and Saddleworth has opened in Uppermill.

“Four Plus One” features a series of dramatic paintings by four well known local artists, as well as sculptures by Jean Fenton from Delph, at the Millyard Gallery in Uppermill’s Square.

Gallery owner Joan Frost said: “It’s the first time I’ve presented such a large exhibition in this style.

“Jean’s work offers thoughtful contemplation alongside the demonstrative paintings. She aims to find a peace and tranquillity, with the possibility of underlying emotion and hopefully perfect form, to achieve this.”

Artist Peter Stanaway, from Springhead, has been painting for 33 years. He is known for sharp graphic images but has concentrated on a series of colourful paintings featuring folk singers for this exhibition.

His friends include The Oldham Tinkers and the Homeowners. “I’m showing these paintings in recognition of the many pleasant evenings I have spent with them,” he explained. “I hope my work offers sense the excitement and fun these musicians generate.”

Steve Capper, from Delph, works in Oldham and Joan says: “The area has a major influence on his work.”

Kevin Haynes, a semi-retired boss of an engineering business who now lives in Dobcross, has captured childhood memories of working men in cotton mills and sporting events.

The exhibition’s oldest artist, Oldham-born Russel Howarth (82), who has exhibited in London, is a master of tonal painting.

Joan said: “His works in oil, pencil and graphite depict the sombre aspects of his beloved Pennines.”

The exhibition, which runs until May 17, can be seen from 10am-5pm daily, Sunday noon-4pm. The gallery is closed Tuesdays.
