Owners of illegal advertising trailers taking up space in lay-bys are facing a crackdown by Oldham Council.
Officers are starting enforcement action against the trailers following an increasing number appearing on private land and in lay-bys around Oldham.
The companies involved have been told of the change in the council’s approach, which will see the new powers used to prosecute those responsible and the possibility of offending trailers being seized.
The Cabinet Member for Environment and Infrastructure, Councillor Mark Alcock, said: “These trailers are unsightly, especially when placed in conservation areas.
“Where they are on or near the highway they can be a distraction and a serious hazard to motorists.
“I would hope that companies will act responsibly and remove the offending vehicles.
“However, in the event they do not, we will not hesitate to take formal action against them.
“Companies who intend to use these trailers, will require planning permission and under no circumstances can they be left on the highway.”
