Man kept hundreds of animals in filth
Date published: 07 May 2009
A man who kept a menagerie of exotic animals in poor health at his Fitton Hill home has been jailed for three months and banned from keeping animals for five years.
John Ord Clark’s Dowry Street home was searched twice by animal welfare officers in July last year.
They found hundreds of exotic animals, mainly reptiles, in each of the three bedrooms and many more in the back yard and outhouse.
He was found guilty of running an unlicensed pet trade and offences under the Animal Welfare Act.
RSPCA Inspector Catherine Burns said there were more than 1,000 animals, living in their own filth.
Clarke denied the charges, but Oldham magistrates found him guilty.
Councillor Mark Alcock, Cabinet member for environment and infrastructure, said: “The results send out a very clear message that Oldham Council will prosecute people who ill-treat animals.
“I would like to thank the animal welfare officers who have worked hard on this case.”
l Anyone with concerns about animal welfare should call the council on 0161 770 6644.
