INSPIRATIONAL teenager Asim Mahmood has been named as Oldham’s Student of the Year.

The 18-year-old from Coppice has been honoured by the Rotary Club of Oldham for his outstanding community work.

Asim hopes to become a dentist and is currently studying for A-levels in biology, chemistry and sociology at Oldham Sixth Form College where he is a student governor.

He is president of the college’s students’ association, also leading its fundraising team, has done voluntary work with Age Concern and has taken part in the Shared Future peace and leadership courses in Vermont and Wales.

Asim was presented with his certificate and a £500 computer voucher, supplied by Bits and Bytes in Shaw, by the mayor of Oldham, Councillor Shoab Akhtar.

But Asim said modestly: “I did not really think I would win to be honest, it was incredible.

“I don’t know how I find the time to do everything. You just get used to it and I definitely enjoy doing it.”

It is the eighth year that Rotary has held the award. Sian Jones from Crompton House and Jack Williams from Hulme Grammar School were the runners-up, each receiving a £100 computer voucher.

However, co-ordinator Ray Coverley said: “It’s disappointing that some of our secondary schools and colleges have not, for one reason or another, sent in any nominations during the eight years.”
