A Failsworth man who hit his partner in the face with a mug in front of his adoptive son after a drink-fuelled argument has been jailed for 15 months.

Stuart Campbell (41) came back from an evening boozing and after throwing a stereo out of the window he attacked partner Nicola London.

Campbell, of Devon Road, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm at an earlier hearing at Minshull Street crown court, Manchester.

Mr Jonathan Savage, rosecuting, said: “He went out to the pub with a friend and didn’t return until midnight. By that time his partner Nicola London’s son was in bed. She was still up. It was immediately apparent that he was very drunk and was aggressive and Miss London was so concerned that she went upstairs.

“The defendant then turned the stereo on an turned it up louder, despite repeated requests to turn it down. Miss London attempted to turn it down herself and was prevented from doing so.

“He then picked it up and threw it outside. Nicola has gone upstairs again but she came down and he then kicked her and said ‘I’m going to destroy your lives.’

“She began clearing up the house and as she bent down to pick something up the defendant grabbed her by the hair. She swung her arms out and in doing so she hit him in the face.

“The defendant then said, ‘If you’re going to fight like a man I’ll hit you like a man.’ He struck her in the face, banging her into a kitchen unit.

“He punched her repeatedly and picked up a mug which he used to repeatedly strike her in the face. The commotion had woken her son who witnesses part of the attack. Miss London shouted at him to call the police.

“She suffered a cut to the right eyebrow which needed four stitches and a cut to her head which was glued.

“He has 39 offences recorded against him. He went to prison for four months in 1995 for assault and for 19 months in 2006.”

Mr Paul O’Brien, defending, said: “He wishes to apologise to Nicola London for what happened and also to her son who has been brought up by this defendant as his son.

“He realises that the relationship is over but he does express a wish to see his adopted son.”

The judge, Mr Recorder Michael Murray, said: “This was a truly cowardly attack on your partner. The fact that you were drunk is no excuse.”
