DR Kershaw’s Hospice received a £3,000 windfall thanks to young philanthropists from South Chadderton School.

They handed the money to the charity after winning a youth and philanthropy project.

The national project saw teams pupils from Years 10 and 11 research a social issue such as drugs, knife crime, homelessness and prostitution which affects the local community

They interviewed a charity which is tackling the issue and did a presentation on its work. The winning team received £3,000 from the initiative to present to its chosen charity.

Around 50 UK schools in the UK are taking part in the project and South Chadderton is the only one from Oldham. The winning team of Khaliqa Bano, Danielle Kelly, Conor Leach and Jade Smith will now take part in a celebration day in London on June 25.

Rosin Bartlett, head of RE and citizenship said: “The pupils have all worked so hard and they have learnt a lot of skills in terms of presentation and teamwork.

“I am extremely proud of what they have achieved.

“They are learning they are citizens of Oldham and they can make a viable contribution to the community.”

Dr Kershaw’s appeals manager Brian Hurst said: “It was a real pleasure to work with the pupils and we are delighted to receive £3,000 which is a great boost for the hospice.”
