Choir on road to stardom

PUPILS from a Shaw school will feature in a BBC drama tomorrow after more musical success.

Crompton House Choir will be among the cast appearing on the small screen in hit TV show “Waterloo Road” at 8pm.

The drama is set in a failing Rochdale comprehensive school and features a host of former “Coronation Street” stars including Eva Pope, Angela Griffin and Denise Welch.

In the show, Waterloo Road School Choir enters the North-West Schools Choir of the Year competition.

One of the competing choirs, “Forest Mount School” — look out for the specially-made green uniforms — is actually made up of students from Crompton House.

After rehearsals in school and in Rochdale, filming took place at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester last November.

The appearance comes only days after the Chronicle revealed the school has scooped the rare accolade of having three music groups invited to perform at the National Festival of Music for Youth in Birmingham.

The school’s director of music, Jack Pickford, said: “It was a great experience for our pupils and fascinating to see behind the scenes of a major production. I can’t say who won, but we sang very well.”

Head teacher Elsie Tough said: “It is a tribute to the school that we were invited.

“As a specialist expressive arts school we are delighted to offer our pupils a wide range of arts experiences.”

“Waterloo Road” is now in its fourth series with filming under way on a fifth.
