AN express train came within a whisker of disaster after vandals pushed huge coping stones from a Saddleworth railway bridge as it passed underneath.

British Transport Police have launched a full-scale investigation to find the culprits responsible for the attack on the Greenfield-Grasscroft border.

The driver of the FirstTranspennine Express from Hull to Manchester alerted officers after seeing boys push the stones off the bridge parapet.

The train was travelling at more than 60mph when it passed under the isolated bridge, but miraculously it was not hit.

Paul Renshaw (62) who lives near the bridge and regularly walks his dog in the area, said he was at the scene shortly after the incident.

“Large top stones and other big stones had been pulled from an adjoining wall and carried to the parapet where they were pushed off directly over the track,” he said.

“There are still deep scratch marks on top of the bridge where the stones were pushed.”

Mr Renshaw reported his findings to British Transport Police and rail operators. “The stones have now been moved to the side of the track,” he added.

Glyn Hellam, a spokesman for British Transport Police, said: “This incident could have had serious consequences.

“Anyone who knows the culprits should contact us immediately.”

The Greenfield and Grasscroft Residents Association said: “We are glad British Transport Police are on this disturbing case.

“If anyone sees anything suspicious on or near the railway line they should get in touch with them immediately.”
