Glass artist joins elite

A TALENTED retired teacher has been invited to add a touch of glass to an elite group of Saddleworth-based artists.

John Orson, a 58-year-old former Oldhamer living in Mossley, has been admitted to the exclusive Saddleworth Crafts Co-operative which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

Mr Orson specialises in producing a wide range of tasteful products using stained or restoration glass.

His company, Moorglass, launched a few weeks ago, design and make unique artistic pieces combining traditional craftsmanship with sympathetic designs.

Mr Orson, father of two, uses Tiffany-techniques to produce stained glass lamp shades, jewellery boxes and other glass products.

And he has already completed commissions for personally-crafted leaded windows and renovating windows.

“I got interested in working with stained glass six years ago,” he explained. “And it just grew from there.

“I love the challenge and excitement developing art deco and other complimentary design techniques.

“I have produced some items in a Celtic theme and my wife, Marion, has been very supportive of my work. I have incorporated a slide from a magic lantern set I bought in some of my work – it adds a stunning effect.

“I am delighted and honoured to join the crafts co-operative,” he added, “working with some really talented people.”

International artist John McCombs, who has a studio and gallery at the co-operative’s headquarters in King Street, Delph .

He said: “We are pleased to welcome John on board. We have a very talented team displaying their skills. Crafts include everything from pottery, jewellery to embroidered linen and photography.

“I am sure John will make a real contribution to the group, ” he added.
