GET on in school, get online at home — that was the message as parents gathered at Counthill School to learn about a scheme which offers families help to buy a home computer.
Parents of pupils from Counthill, Breeze Hill and the surrounding primary schools who might be eligible for financial assistance through the Government’s Home Access scheme met to find out more about the programme.
Visitors watched a presentation about the scheme and staff were on hand to find out whether they are eligible for a free laptop and a minimum of 12 months’ broadband internet connection.
Oldham is one of only two local authorities in England chosen to pilot the scheme. It will be rolled out nationally later this year.
Councillor Jackie Stanton said: “The impact of this programme has been phenomenal with one in eight Oldham pupils benefiting from a grant-funded laptop computer and internet connection. Computers are transforming the way pupils learn.”
Anyone who has not already applied to the scheme and would like to find out whether they are eligible should contact a special helpline which has been set up on 0161-770 7770. Alternatively, visit www.oldham.gov.uk/homeaccess
