Water way to toast 90th!
A SPRIGHTLY swimmer will celebrate his 90th birthday on Friday by taking an early morning dip at Saddleworth Pool.
Stanley Stewart, of Delph, packs his swimming trucks and towel for 20 lengths at the pool every other day.
The great-grandfather, who has scaled down his daily visits, attends the early morning session and is in the water by 7am.
Mr Stewart said: “I’ve always been active and have played tennis, bowls and walked everywhere.
“I learnt how to swim aged 10 at Oldham Baths in Union Street and have always enjoyed it.
“When I was 80, I was sponsored to do 80 lengths but I actually made it to 100.
“I find swimming easier than walking. I’ll keep going as long as I can.”
Mr Stewart, who lived in India for 19 years while working in the raw jute industry, has been a member of the swimming baths for 25 years.
The crossword fan and member of Delph Methodist Church believes staying active is key to a long and healthy life.
He added: “It definitely helps when you get older as it keeps joints supple, helps with your breathing and you feel better after doing it.
“I’ve also got an exercise bike at home which I use, although probably not as much as I should. I lead a fairly healthy life — I always make sure I eat a banana every single morning. I smoked a pipe for 40 years, but gave that up a while ago.”
His daughter Eileen Siddall, from Diggle, said her father taught her how to swim by throwing her into a pool aged six months.
She said: “I do like swimming but don’t go as often as my father.
“He pays 90 pence every time he goes but it would be nice if he was allowed to swim for free.
“I’m proud of my dad.”
Mr Stewart’s birthday celebrations also include a family meal and a party at Dobcross Band Club.
