Quartet set for Halle spotlight

A QUARTET of talented musicians are tuning up for the small screen after being selected for a unique orchestra.

Rory Farrell, James Parkinson, Joseph McLoughlin and David Kelly, of Our Lady’s School, Royton, have been chosen for the Halle Harmony Youth Orchestra.

It’s made up of 70 youngsters from across Greater Manchester, particularly focusing on those from disadvantaged areas.

The aim is to bring together young people from diverse backgrounds that would not normally meet.

But the musicians were selected for their natural ability after a series of auditions.

The project will culminate in a performance of classical orchestral work at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester’s international concert venue, next spring.

Channel 4 are currently filming the formation of the orchestra for three documentary style programmes which will chart their journey from auditions to the concert.

Youth at Risk, a charity dedicated to working for young people, will provide personal development, coaching and support.

A spokesman said as well as the ability to master their instruments and the dynamics of an orchestra, the project’s success will be dependent on their ability to connect with each other.

He added: “True success will be demonstrated by the forging of powerful, long-lasting relationships, the breaking down of barriers between class, cultural background and geographical boundaries.

“The ability of the young people to set aside pre-conceived ideas and beliefs, see where they limit themselves and identify barriers to success will ultimately improve their playing as well as their relationships to each other and the world.”

The Halle is England’s oldest professional symphony orchestra and the first to establish an education department that’s been acclaimed for its pioneering educational programme.
