Sunshine hopes for carnival

FAILSWORTH Carnival organisers are hoping for summer sunshine to gather the crowds at this year’s event on July 18 and 19.
The two-day extravaganza will be held at Lord Lane playing fields, Failsworth.
The carnival parade, on Saturday, features local organisations and floats and leaves Lord Lane at 1pm.
Later that day, Failsworth carnival queen and her retinue will be crowned.
A falconry display is back by popular demand and will be held on Sunday.
Visitors of all ages will be able to enjoy fairground rides, stalls and other attractions including an Army climbing wall.
Failsworth Carnival Committee is hoping for warmer, drier weather following two very wet carnivals.
Spokeswoman Enid Bell said: “Hotter weather means the pennies mount up and local voluntary and community groups benefit.
“All the profits go to these groups that range from play groups, brownies, cubs, guides and scouts through to residents and sports groups.
“Last year, £4,500 was distributed to the groups and this was quite a bit down on the previous years.”
Carnival magazines will be distributed free to homes in Failsworth late next month.
