A NEW chapter has dawned for Lees Library following an extensive refurbishment programme.
The building has been extended and revamped thanks to a grant from the Big Lottery Fund and now includes a new community space as well as improved computer facilities.
Library users can save time when borrowing or returning items by using dedicated self-service machines. Changes have also been made to the children’s area.
Councillor John McCann, Oldham Council’s Cabinet member for community services and housing, said: “Lees Library Community Hub will be a great community asset.
“The hub project has shown our commitment to working with local communities to improve services across Oldham.”
Oldham Council secured a grant of £536,685 from the Big Lottery Community Libraries programme to develop the community hub concept back in October, 2007. Building work began in September, 2008.
Library users and community groups will now help with the programming and running of the new facility.
The flexible community space will be used by a wide range of groups and organisations for activities, learning and advice sessions and social events. A smaller private room will provide a space for one-to-one meetings. The improvements to learning and information services mean that from September, the hub will host a range of Lifelong Learning classes for adults.
A dedicated after-school homework centre — run with the help of young volunteers — will run from the start of the next school year.
Every Monday in June will be an open day with staff happy to show visitors around the new facilities up until 7pm.
A family fun day and opening party on Saturday, July 4, will include children’s arts activities, food stalls and an official visit from the new Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Jim McArdle.
