Two bars sign up to drinks deal

MORE of Oldham’s pubs and bars are joining the fight to stamp out booze-fuelled trouble in the town centre.

The Lounge in Union Street and Blu 62 in Yorkshire Street are the latest venues to agree improved licensing conditions with the council.

The latest two follow the JD Wetherspoon-owned Up Steps Inn and The Squire Knott, who both reached a deal with Oldham Council last week.

The four bars have agreed their own specific terms as part of the fight to discourage cheap booze offers and, if offers are run, taking measures to slow down the consumption of alcohol and increase security.

Further meetings have also been held with most of the bars affected by the pending licence reviews.

Councillor Mark Alcock, cabinet member for environment and infrastructure, said: “This is further welcome news in our bid to end the culture of irresponsible drink promotions in Oldham town centre.

“The council is confident that more bars will come forward and agree to change their operating conditions without the need for a review to take place.”

The first hearing of the town centre bar reviews — which involves Liquid/Envy in Waterloo Street — will take place on Monday at the Civic Centre from 9.30am. It is open to the public.
