Alarm saved man’s life

A FIRE chief has commended a householder for having a smoke alarm.

The alarm alerted both the occupant of a house in Woodbank Terrace, Mossley, and his neighbour, who called the fire brigade at 11.30pm on Saturday.

Crews arrived to find the man safely outside, but all three floors of the mid-terraced house badly smoke-logged.

Crew manager Steve Hoyles said: “The smoke alarm saved his life. He had gone to bed leaving two compressed paper brickettes to dry out on top of a wood-burning stove.

“They had started to smoulder and filled the house with smoke.”
