POLICE have been cracking down on anti-social behaviour in Shaw as part of an operation to make parks and open-spaces safer.

Over the past two weekends, officers from Royton and Shaw Neighbourhood Policing Team have stepped up patrols around St George’s playing field.

They took youths home on Friday and Saturday evenings following concerns from residents.

Shaw beat manager, PC Adam Murphy, said: “Anti-social behaviour is the main issue that residents say affects their quality of life.

“In response to reports of large numbers of young people congregating on St George’s playing field we increased patrols and spoke to young people about the consequences of getting involved in anti-social behaviour.

“Where necessary, we also escorted the young people home and spoke to parents. This operation has been successful in reducing incidents of anti-social behaviour in this area. We will continue to listen to residents’ concerns and keep them informed about what we are doing to tackle them.”

The action was part of Oldham’s Safer Spaces scheme — a force-wide initiative aimed at encouraging the responsible use of public parks and open areas.

It saw police officers carrying out a number of operations in support of their ongoing enforcement work to tackle anti-social behaviour. Officers also want young people to think about their personal safety when out and about.

PC Murphy added: “By sticking to well-lit areas, keeping valuables out of sight, staying with a friend or close to a group of people, and being aware of their own surroundings, young people can avoid becoming victims of crime.

“If any residents have information about who may be involved in crime and anti-social behaviour in their neighbourhood, I encourage them to get in touch with us on 0161-856 8983 or by e-mail at roytonandshaw.npt@gmp.police.uk.”
