It’s fun! It’s family! And it will be absolutely fantastic! Welcome to this year’s action-packed Saddleworth Summer Show — a bonanza feast that proves Saddleworth’s got real talent!

A dazzling line-up of quality attractions are expected to draw record crowds at the area’s biggest and most popular spectacular.

And here’s the added bonus: admission has been pegged at rock-bottom prices to ensure your great fun day out need not break the bank.

Organised by Saddleworth and Oldham Metro Rotary Clubs, the show takes place this Sunday — June 14 — at Churchill playing fields, Wellington Road, Greenfield.

This year there will be two main arenas and an increased number of exciting acts, which will be hosted by Granada TV’s hugely popular, zany presenter Paul Crone. And ‘Croney’ will join the fun too —that’s guaranteed !

The event, sponsored by Veolia Environment Services and the Oldham Evening Chronicle, will offer fascinating displays by birds from Malhamdale Falconry, which enthralled last year’s audience.

Petwise Zoo, a famous mobile zoo with up to 100 animals, will provide shows throughout the day including quirky terrapin and ferret racing.

And, keeping with the show’s part-country pursuits theme, visitors can try their hand at laser clay pigeon shooting and fly fishing – on grass.

The area’s famous llamas and exotic breeds are scheduled to make an appearance – plus donkey rides, a donkey derby and, of course, the legendary duck race.

The English Civil War Society offer a colourful display and give visitors the chance to experience the sights and smells of the 17th century.

In the show’s main arena, Tom and Tilley Tomfoolery — the world’s almost flying three-wheeled comedy car — which promises to be Punch & Judy meeting Wacky Races.

And there is a laughter-filled performance from The Wacky Tumblairs, a comedy-style trampoline act with lots of hilarious clowning.

Children are encouraged to take part in a prize-winning scarecrow competition where they will gain free entry if they come in appropriate garb.

Organisers are repeating the schools’ football competition.

In addition, there will be local charity and craft stalls.

Other popular entertainment in a packed programme includes country dancing, The Saddleworth Morris Men and local brass bands who will perform throughout the day.

Motor enthusiasts will be able to drool over vintage cars and bikes and, in addition to a wide variety of food outlets, there will be a beer tent, wine bar and soft drinks.

Last year the show raised nearly £8,000 for local and Rotary charities– and this year, with your help, we’re hoping to top that figure.

So don’t miss out, come along and join the fun!

Croney and Chaddy’s double act

It promises to be a real hoot when zany television presenter Paul Crone (left) meets Chaddy Owl (right) at this year’s sparkling Saddleworth Summer Show.

For more than 20 years one of the best known TV faces in the North-West, Paul is returning to Saddleworth by popular demand after appearing in the show last year.

Croney, as he is affectionately known, will be joined by Latics mascot, Chaddy Owl, to put that extra touch of stardust on the sparkling show which is expected to attract a huge audience. Latics community manager Colin Moore, said: “We are delighted to support this marvellous show which raises so much money for local good causes.

“Chaddy is a real show-stopper and loved be everyone — I’m sure things will be a real hoot with Croney.”

Chaddy will be on call to assist Paul present prizes in the primary schools football competition on the day – and he’s expected to pose for photographs with admirers.

And the smart owl is likely to pit his wits against Paul in the legendary Donkey Derby event.

“Chaddy is really up for being involved in the big day,” added Mr Moore. “I am sure everyone will have a great time.”

Paul Crone is hugely popular with the TV audiences for his versatility and ability to turn his hand to just about any facet of broadcasting.

He said: “I’m thrilled to be asked back again. I really love coming to Saddleworth. I made loads of friends last year and the show – despite earlier winds – was a great success.

“I took part in lots of the events myself – it was great fun.”
